Murray River Adventure Trail
As Australia’s longest river, the Murray River stretches 2,508 km across New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Along its banks, the Murray River Adventure trail will creation one of Australia’s most significant nature-based tourism experiences – a 1,040km land and water training linking walking, cycling and paddling routes from Lake Hume in the east to Mildura in the west.
Stage one, led by Parks Victoria, will span 261km from Picnic Point in Barmah National Park to Koondrook, passing through Echuca, the Murray River Reserve, Gunbower National Park and Lower Goulburn National Park. The works will deliver new and upgraded canoe and kayak launches, walking connections, bookable campsites, campgrounds, toilets, car parking, picnic facilities and way finding signage – making it easier for visitors to explore and enjoy the riverside environment.
Hansen Partnership is supporting Parks Victoria to navigate the complex planning pathway for this stage, securing clause 52.30 State Project approval from the Department of Transport and Planning. This approval covers proposed trail upgrades, water launches, campgrounds, rest areas, and signage, bringing together multiple authorities, stakeholders and technical assessments into one streamlined process.
Our works also involve assisting with approvals from Murray River Council in New South Wales for six water launches that extend into New South Wales, ensuring the project can move forward across both sides of the river.
When complete, the Murray River Adventure Trail will open up new opportunities for multi-day adventures, deepen the connection between people and place, and celebrate the cultural and environmental significance of the Murray River.
