Glen Eira Street Design Guidelines
In October 2020, Hansen Partnership was engaged by the City of Glen Eira to develop the Glen Eira Street Design Guidelines in Melbourne’s south-east. These guidelines aim to influence the future urban design of streets and activity centres across the municipality.
The guidelines promote collaboration among communities, landowners, decision-makers, and service providers, establishing a shared vision for creating streets and public spaces that prioritise people. Key objectives include enhancing active transport options such as walking and cycling, improving climate resilience through adaptable transport systems, and reducing car dependency to support sustainable local economic growth.
Aligned with the Glen Eira Integrated Transport Strategy, the guidelines balance functional transport needs with placemaking, designating some streets for efficient vehicle movement while prioritising active transport on others.
The development process was guided by the Victorian Government’s Movement and Place Framework and included:
- Network Classification: Reviewing documents, Movement and Place classifications, and identifying street types.
- Network Performance: Establishing design principles and identifying performance gaps.
- Streetscape Palette: Creating a “Kit of Parts” for street interventions, including design guides and material selections.
Stakeholder engagement played a critical role throughout the project, ensuring that local needs and challenges were addressed effectively.
