Laneway House
Laneway House by MRTN Architects explores multi-generational living with additional accommodation set deep within the property. The design engages a bluestone laneway in Carlton, providing a separate entry that connects the home to its urban context. By combining this approach with careful site planning, the design creates independence, flexibility, and a central courtyard to function as the heart of the property.
Design Response
The two-storey addition is positioned at the back of the site to maximise northern light, garden outlooks, and internal flow. This layout supports multi-generational living by offering independent spaces for household members while allowing future flexibility for separate accommodation.
The rear laneway interface is carefully considered, with robust masonry and a curated mix of materials creating visual interest and defining the building’s presence. Thoughtful proportions and detailing ensure the addition complements the existing terrace while responding to the character and history of Carlton’s streets and laneways. Openings are oriented to maximise daylight and garden views, demonstrating how sensitive design can activate an underutilised back block while maintaining privacy and functionality.
Development Advisory and Approvals
Securing planning approval in an inner-urban context requires balancing efficiency with complex regulations. Hansen’s Development Advisory team supported MRTN Architects throughout the process, providing expert advice on urban planning, site strategy, and development considerations in Melbourne. This collaboration achieved a successful outcome that met the clients brief and responded to the surrounding neighbourhood.
