Stewart Street Streetscape Upgrades
Once home to the Australian Knitting Mills (AKM), where uniforms were produced for Australian soldiers during World War I, Stewart Street’s industrial heritage became the inspiration for Hansen’s streetscape concept.
More than a decade ago, Hansen prepared the site analysis and concept plan to transform Stewart Street into a shared zone and create a more welcoming arrival to Richmond Station. The design drew on the site’s history through painted pavement patterns inspired by military rank insignia and knitted fabric, while brick columns referenced the surrounding industrial architecture.
The concept also included a pocket park with planting, seating and lighting, improved accessibility, wider kerb space, and a streetscape that better balanced the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.
