Port Campbell Township Revitalisation
The revitalisation of Port Campbell township by Hansen’s Landscape Architecture team draws inspiration from the dramatic Shipwreck Coast. The eroding limestone cliffs and windblown sand dunes extend into the foreshore and Lord Street, evoking a sense of the sea encroaching on the township. Lord and Cairns Streets are being transformed into shared pedestrian spaces, encouraging visitors to explore and enjoy the town centre. Picnic decks are being constructed to provide views over the bay, and the surf club forecourt is being reconfigured into an events plaza for activities such as surf carnivals and markets.
Integrated art by Vicki Couzens, a Keerray Wooroong woman from western Victoria, incorporates local stories of whales, courage, and community into the design through elements of light, sculpture, and sound. The project aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly and engaging space while reflecting the area’s cultural and geological history in the public realm.
The design has been shaped by input from local residents through an extensive community engagement process. Hansen worked in collaboration with Terroir Architects on the project. Construction is underway and is scheduled for completion in 2025.
