‘Charlie’ is an award-winning residential development in the inner-city Melbourne suburb of Richmond made up of 96 apartments and 8 townhouses. Hansen Partnership worked with developer Baracon to provide urban design and landscape architectural services associated with the multi-storey residential apartment complex.

The design of the buildings included provision for an extensive external roof garden on a second level podium as an outdoor space for residents of the complex, providing an attractive and flexible space for residents, in terms of their actual use of the space and as a vibrant space to look onto from upper level balconies.

The roof garden design incorporates a range of spaces, features and materials allowing for a variety of recreational uses by residents, including extensive areas of timber decking, large format stone pavers, recycled timber pergola structures, extensive planter boxes and feature lighting.

Following approval of the design by the City of Yarra, Hansen was retained by Baracon to prepare construction drawings for the landscape elements of the wider development.
